My name is Jake Pallogudis, and I am currently a 4th year student at Northeastern University pursuing a bachelor's degree in Mechanical Engineering with a minor in Philosophy. I grew up in Hawthorne, NY, and attended Fordham Preparatory School for high school from 2017 - 2021. I became interested with engineering at a young age, always being fascinated with how things work and are assembled.
Ever since I started at Northeastern University, I have loved being able to learn so much about engineering. The classes I have taken and work experience I have gained have led me to pursuing a career in a more creative and design-based side of engineering. I am excellent at brainstorming ideas to solve a problem and thrive as an independent worker. Outside of school, I enjoy playing music, practicing Taekwondo, and reading. I hope to one day be able to work in a design-oriented position that is very connected to consumers.
Ever since I was 7 years old, I have been taking Taekwondo classes. I took weekly classes at a studio near my home and earned my black belt in 2015 when I was 12 years old. When I got my black belt, I further pursued my interest in this sport by joining the weapons class and learning how to use the staff, nunchucks, the sword, and kamas. I also joined my studios demo team, where I got the opportunity to perform board breaks and difficult kicks in front of an audience.
Once I started high school, I began to work at my studio as an assistant instructor and discovered my love for teaching. I would assist classes and teach students their forms, as well as moderate sparring matches. I attended classes and worked at my home studio until I left for college.
When I got to college, I joined the Taekwondo team at Northeastern and quickly found myself dedicating more and more time to the team. I would go to 3 competitions a semester with the team, and performed in the demonstrations. My second semester I joined the Eboard as the secretary and became an assistant instructor. I remained as the secretary for three semesters, and became the vice president of the club from May 2023 - May 2024. As vice president, I assisted the president with club matters and ran the administrative side of the club. I also graduated from assistant instructor to instructor and got the opportunity to lead my own classes of 20+ students.
Music has been one of the most important parts of my life since I was little. I could barely even speak when I asked for my first keyboard for Christmas, and after teaching myself "Twinkle Twinkle Little Star", my parents decided to put my into piano lessons.
Once I got to middle school, I began to learn my second instrument, the trumpet. I played the trumpet throughout middle and high school as a member of the school band and jazz band, and performed with the jazz band at Fordham Prep. During this time, I also began taking guitar lessons.
Since getting to college, I have had the opportunity to further develop my musical skills by playing with the pit orchestra for NUStage. I have played in the orchestra for three shows, and plan on continuing until I graduate.
Apart from playing music, I have also always loved musical theater. Ever since I was little, my family would take trips into New York City to see Broadway shows, and I would love every single one. When I was in elementary school, I sang and performed in a theater camp near my house. I still love taking my friends and family to see new Broadway shows, and love belting showtunes on roadtrips.
I have been obsessed with theme parks my entire life, especially Disney and Universal. When I was little, I went to the parks for the characters, and as I have grown, I have come to appreciate the parks as an engineer.
When I began to go to the parks as an older teenager, I started to care less about meeting characters and instead found myself admiring every single park of the park. The thought that went into the pathways to maximize crowd flow. How switch tracks would work on certain rides. How rides would go into alternative modes if an animatronic or effect was not operational. It was all amazing to me and I wanted to help create it.
I love keeping up with all the new developments in park technologies and new ride developments, and watch Youtube videos every day learning how rides work. My dream is to be able to work at one of these theme parks in any capacity, but especially as a ride development engineer.
I love getting lost in fictional worlds, and have loved to read ever since I was in pre-school. Going to a bookstore and picking out a new book is one of my favorite things to do. My favorite genres are fantasy and mystery books, but I enjoy any form of fiction.
Some recent books I have loved include Piranesi by Susanna Clarke, And Then There Were None by Agatha Christie, and Turtles All the Way Down by John Green.
